Brotherhood of deformed joints.

And so another weekend has passed.

Hmm... Rather hectic week. But glad that it passed quickly with great companionship. And not stuck alone in lab.

So the whole weekend was spent at Climberprix. Literally the WHOLE weekend. All thanks to....

  1. Superb adminstration
  2. Lack of allen keys and impact drivers.
  3. Lack of ladders
  4. Numerous cyclops
  5. Last but not the least, lots of eye power.

Anyway managed to squeeze into the finals. Not a convincing one though cos i qualified last and there were alot of mistakes with the tabulations of results........So....i am considered lucky.

Finals was good. With one top. I thought my forte was crimps.... But i flopped on a crimp route and I topped a sloper route. =P oh well... Proud of myself. Have something to declare.. This is my first time finishing a competition route... SINCe....................Lets see... Pumpfest 2007? the one I won? haHha.. What a open noob.... if only i managed to do route3.................

Hmm.... Thanks to everyone who supported this short old planet. Hmm..... People like Claudia, Sandra, Jensen, Youjie, Matthew, YIXIANG (my buddy), Jud as well as my team. Appreciated man.... Makes competiting for the team all worth well.
Mind you.... It is not easy being a spectator ok? Especially for ROCKMASTER and Climberprix.

Come to think about it, this could jolly well be my last competition or second last that I am representing the team.. AWwww.. oh well.... move on.............

Now that this weekend is over, I am officially down with a flu and a sore throat...

2 more weekends to go.... Nike run and Sports award next.

Did I mention I got a new pair of shoes? =))))))))

Qouting Jenny...... "I like to start first. Cos if i finish the route, I can f!@$% with people's mind"

I totally agree....

It's my fault

I am not proud of working with 50rats and having to kill at least 1 a day. Seriously

I am trying my best to be careful but somehow shit happens.

Today was the first day of 14 of chronic feeding. The very first session went wrong.

I was distracted and I accidentally caused the death of 1rat. Hmm... Somehow the rat choked on the liquid drug and yea....The rest is self explanatory. No need for details.

I am seriously traumatised by the whole damn incident. Imagine staring blankly at a dying animal. Hmm.... Bloody sinful... I didn't sign up for this.

The whole incident really dampens my confidence and morale for th whole project. Started off wel but somehow alot of mishaps along the way... Partially due to unforeseencircumstances... And also due to my negliance, short concentration span, carelessness. I need to wake up.

On one end, there is the ethical issue of working with rats. I feel sad and down whenever one dies. On the other hand, when each sample dies, I lose one valuable data source. It is really pressurizing. Got to be careful so as to not harm any animals by accidentally (which causes great guilt) and also got to be careful so that I do not shrink my sample size any smaller.

The whole incident is haunting me. Putting 16 live rats into one gas chamber at one go (as instructed) and having an animal suffocating due to your own negliance IS NOT EDUCATIONAL at all.

No wonder Matthew says that FYP are a waste of money.

And now I can truly understand why Chloe changed her diet preference.

This is a dark post.

Till the End of Oct

Hmm... Rock camp just over... It's the last rock camp that I will be attending. Oh my... Thinking back about the previous camps.... Ranging from flying chickens, to CB yuen talk, to lots of sentosa and blah blah blah. Definitely unforgettable memories. No doubt, climbing team is my second family. Ok. Stop emo-ing.

Anyway... Straight after climbing carnival, I had lab. Got to prepare samples and drugs for the rats the next day. Ended around evening time. Shagged.

And then..........................The next day... I struggled to wake up in the rainy morning and left yixiang's room hastily for lab at 830am...

Guess what time i ended. Holy crap................ 745pm..... Thats like nearly 12hours of lab. With 20min chicken rice alone break. I pipetted the most number of wells on a microplate in my entire 4years in NUS. Continuously for 1hour. Pipette until pump. microlitres of reagents.... Volume so minute that you dont even feel you are adding anything in. Crap. To make things worse... the aircon cold until I wanna sleep while pipetting.

And then...............................I got to run back and fro between Animal Holding Unit (AHU) and my lab. Multipe times. Not fun, I tell you....

And then............................ Luckily my lab supervisor is nice enough to help me deal with the blood drawing as I perform microplate reading. Otherwise... 12hours lab becomes 24hours lab....

BUT.......................at the end of the whole day...it was all worth while. Managed to obtain relatively good results and objectives of the last few weeks were met. So thats a consolation. *Pat Pat on the back.

then it was off to yixiang's room. Packed up and off in a jerky cab.

With the attained effective dose of 150mg/kg, I will start the phase two of my FYP. 3weeks of chronic feeding with the TCM. Which means 3weeks of school everyday. Including saturdays and sunday. =(

Now... it is back to Universe and Cell bio. And many many many projects... pls start ok?

End of Oct.... come come....

Stalled.

Dam sian.

The animal holding unit just told me that they are unable to hold the next batch of rats due to the lack of space.

so I might have to delay the second batch of experiments.

Which means, it will eat into the exams period. Really GG already. Just when I thought I planned everything nice nice... aRGH! !@#@$%^%&^*&(*&^%$@#$%

Please help me....

Two of my purchases for the month.

Haystack in a coalmine

School started! Quite a relaxing week so far. More climbing than studying! Shouldn't be the case since I am yr4! Should spend more time in the lab instead of gym!

According to Joyce, it is rumoured that FYP students are graded according to the amount of hours spent in the lab rather than results! mauahah. Must show face more!

And so I have decided to be garang and squeeze 4modules this semester on top of my 16MC FYP.

1. Pharmacogenetics LSM4212
2. Toxicology LSM 4211
3. Advanced cell biology LSM4232
4. Understanding the Universe GEK1520

Hopefully it will not be too bad? Being year4 feels different. It seems that we have more time yet not enough time. Doesnt help when the rest of your Life science peers are always in their lab and my lab mates and I are not doing much. haHAHa.

Hmm...I have just completed my chemical safety course too. Which means I can now order my rats. and probably start my work by end of August. Time to start the project man! Scary. Not forgetting that I have to go to school everyday for one month! just to perform chronic feeding on the rats. Oh well....

AHM is this weekend. Yet to train. Good day... Hopefully yixiang will drag me along the 21km...

About time

Hmm... Haven't been updating for a long time. Dont really know where to start.

School is starting soon.

FYPs are kicking in.

Wonder if things will be the same...Better I hope. I really hope.

Time perhaps will not be on my side. But heart will be. I hope you will.

As simple as a cup of tea...And 3 egg tarts...Promise.

Krabi....

Krabi has been wonderful. Both climbing and the non climbing aspect.

Climbing wise.... I managed to climb many beautiful routes. Just to name a few...

  • Missing Snow
  • Quarks
  • Lion King
  • Kitty toes
  • Tidal Wave
  • Baby gorilla
  • Muay thai
  • Short and savage
  • LARS and LARS

Sent some. Projected some. If only I had more time to finish baby gorilla and many other routes. Too nua at the start perhaps? This is the first time I climbed so man vertical routes. Felt quite accomplished. No major injuries. A couple of big falls. Thanks for the safe belay. =) Overall 9/10 for climbing. I also think DWS is not my thing. Perhaps due to the sea sick.

Moving away from hardcore cranking on the wall, Krabi is really a great place for one to relax his soul.. Free his mind and just slack. Basically you do nothing. Live like a villager and look like one (for my case). Love the place totally. The wind. The sun. The sand. The waves.

I thoroughly enjoyed all 11days of the trip. Every single one of them. Many reasons for them. Some of which all of you know and feel the same.

Alot of random moments that I treasure dearly.

Somehw I wished the trip never end. =) Till then.

Photos on FB.

Will post random thoughts about the trip again when the inspiration comes. =)

Thanks!

Wait.

Back from Krabi.

Bus. Train. Impromptu. I like.

Hmm. Today I attended RCULA course. Responsible Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The subjects were white rats, each the size of your forearm. Quite tamed I would say. Very cute. Too bad I couldn't snap a few photos. The people there are quite strict over the rules and regulations.

Ok now. I must say... although there are guidelines to govern all the animal handling and all the ethnical methods and what not... I must say that lab rats are seriously SAD. It is really quite cruel.

The way some of the noobs ( these includes some Kiasu China man, some ignorant guy, some who thinks he knows it all guy) handled the rats is really a torture to the rats I must say. They dont follow the proper anaesthetic procedures. They inject the rats and draw blood from the heart of the poor rat when it is not even fully anaesthized. Seriously, I feel like smacking them. FIRRATING. The rats were obviously in pain. ARGH! Hmm... and they happily poke and poke and poke and poke and poke, trying to draw some minute amount of blood when their technique is wrong! AND they were using the wrong needle size.

We learnt the following....

1. Restraining the animal
2. Determining the sex of the animal
3. Blood collection from the tail, the neck and the heart
4. Injection through various pathway.

The sad thing is... after all the experiments... The rats will all be euthanized in a CO2 chamber where they will be put to sleep. To demostrate the terminal blood collection from the heart, the instructor prick the heart of the rat and the next thing we know, the rat is delivered to the chamber. The reason being the moment the rat recovers from the anaesthetic effect, it will in serious pain. So to minimize its suffering, it goes to the chamber.

Alritey. So much for the course. Quite a experience. Not a very pleasant one though.

Tmr will be mice handling. Hopefully it will be slightly better?

After the course, it was lunch at engine. Then off to swimming! yeS! swimming. haHAa! slack and stoned before being pushed to swim 1 pathetic lap. hAHaha. tired la....Just like to slack in the pool. haha! After swimming, it was supposedly climbing session. BUT.. you know... after bathing, you feel so comfortable, you just dont wanna move. hahaa! so left th gym and headed home for some nice afternoon nap! till now....

And what did I do for the past few days? Lets see......

Wednesday
Climbing for 2hours then Via ferrata! quite fun i would say! Very safe and the height is quite exciting. Especially the abseiling part. Thanks to Lydia and Andy for the warm hospitality there man! Much appreciated. They provided sturdy Canon Camera, clipped onto our harnesses! cool stuff man! Seriously, now i am considering working there part time. It is something I like! I can feel it. Some say it might get boring after awhile. But... it seems fine to me! Should i?

Tuesday

Work as usual. I managed to get a whooping 16calls that day! Each worth 7bucks! wooHoo! Luck was on my side I must say! After work, I went home and went for a jog. I didnt know how long the route was. I clocked 10km...around 53mins... Tsk... I was dragging myself man.. Mumbling words to keep myself focused. Hmm... Then at night, went for random FROLICK tasting. Hmm.. I must say I personally prefer YAMI (or is it YUMI) yoghurt. hahaah!

Monday

Work as usual then left early to meet some of them at Keppel Island for Shu's birthday. It is a very nice place to take photos. Go facebook to check out some of the photos. Not too pro but enough for viewing pleasure.

Sunday and Saturday

Rockmaster! Spent the whole day there supporting the team. Hmm. Routes were quite ok I supposed? Though some of the endings were slightly hard? Yeah. Super endurance kind of routes. Then in between categories, it was MacDonald's trip. Random nuggets and Fries and to top it off, Ice cold COKE. =) After the competition on Sunday, we went 18chefs and then airport to sort of celebrate shu's birthday on the dot! haha!

Hmm... I TALKED SO MUCH! My blog is like constipation. No words for a couple of days/weeks. But once I have the mood to post, it floods. Muahaha. Words.... Nothing much coming up in the next few weeks. Rockmaster should be the highlight. WORK, CLIMB (vertical), Convention and the ever uncertain Krabi trip. HMm.. Bloody H1N1 is messing up everything!

oh oh! I forgot to mention. I bought my a seagate hard disk from the pc show! 320gb for $119. Yixiang got it at $109. hahaha! Damn.

Ice cream chef is nice too!

OH OH! ONE LAST THING! I wanna buy that north face bag from ken! The red one. BUT.. it has abit of pink in it!

Awaiting for more random and impromptu events to occur. Love it. =) More More!

Essential yet appealed

Hmm... I did 6 vertical climbs today. Not too bad. Never pumped out too quickly. Courage level up. Muahaha.

Considering how long I never climbed vertical already, I think I did fine today. Though abit hestitant once in a while. But with Boris. I mean Doris and Sandra around, motivating and supporting you in unconventionl ways, I was quite psyched to try routes today. The finale was the red route which I gave up. hahaa. Till next time...

Then it was off to town to cut hair and walk around while waiting for Doris and Shuhui to finish their meeting. Walked around aimlessly with Jud and San. Talk cock and alot of other frandom stuff. Dinner at Shohuku? Shodaku? Shohaku? I don't know how to spell la. the MArche style japanese food chain B1 of heeren. hahaHa. so so only la. Refused to buy the FExpensive can drink which costs like 4follars. =P

Then walked to Orchard Central where the Via ferrata wall is. Cool stuff man. Damn high. Nice. First 10 customers of the day for the next 2 weeks get free climbs! so boys and girls. LEts GO...

And I returned home with a silver head thanks to Doris and Jud.

This kinda sums up my day....

Tmr going for tetanus jab. Hopefully I dont fall sick. Got to work at CA tmr. Leading a course. 1st time. Hopefully it turns out well....

Lots of things happening. Lots of things not happening. Just go with the flow....

Sideline waiting.

Hmm...

This has been bugging me for a couple of days. And I need to let it out now since I am having a moodswing now. So might as well. If anyone involved feels offended, I apologise in advance.
I had a course last week at Climb Asia. It was a course for the young boys and girls. Super energetic kids. I took charge of bouldering introduction with Izzat, Sum and Winfred.

The kids were running around and it was quite messy. We had to like spot kids while they messed around. At one point in time, I was walking around trying to follow some kids who wanted to climb another wall and Liting (the lady in charge of the instructors) commented on something that I felt was rather disturbing. She commented I seem to be EATING SNAKE (slacking).

I have worked for so many courses and I dare say I have never lazed around when I am taking a course. Yes I may seem uninterested at times but I dare say I carry out my duties professionally. I dare swear. Just because I wasnt doing anything at the moment, doesnt mean I slacked.

I wasnt in charge of doing vertical belaying for that particular course. But seeing that Farah was shorthanded, I helped belayed a couple of the kids. It wasnt an obligation but I did it. Not claiming any credits here but you get what I mean.

K. Enough said. I didnt bother to explain to her at that point in time. Perhaps it was just a sweeping casual statement and perhaps she didnt mean it. I know she didnt mean it. I dont blame her and I will forget about this issue very soon. No hard feelings. After all, she is the boss and its her duty to ensure instructors are up to the standard.

But I just hate being accused of doing something that I never did. IT IS NOT JUSTIFIED. FPISSED. Especially when it comes to work.

To top it off, it doesnt help when you get a notification at 3am telling you that due to some cancellation of participants, you do not need to report to work the next day.

Yes. I am complaining and I am slightly upset. Yes. Moodswing perhaps

Not retaliating to nonsense and bullying doesnt mean the subject is fine with all the crap it is recieving. There is a limit and i believe most of the time you guys cross it unknowingly. In army we used to say... When you are too nice, people will take advantage of you and shit on your head.

On a lighter note.... here's a couple of photos.

DESPITE THE INSTRUCTIONS TELLING ME TO DO SO!

I thought Nokia would be similar to Ericsson.
BUT NO!

As, Bs, Cs and Hopefully no Ds

Hmm.... I am bored... Just went out with family for a vegetarian meal. Oh my.. I need meat man....

Half the day is gone after lunch. Supposed to go climbing. Argh.

Hmm.. Working at the telesurveyor thingy is not too bad. Flexible working time. Ok pay. BUT... it is rather boring and your throat suffers...

I am coupled this job with a couple of others. CA instructor..... Bert's convention.. Brian's virtual machine and what not....

I am officially 24 now. Updates of my birthday is abit laggy.
16th May was spent at Pumpfest with the team. Didn't do well considering how much I have slacked before the competition. But it was alright I guess. At least I had the team with me there to celebrate my birthday.

Thank you Doris for the card. Thank you Reg and Gerry for organising the pleasant surprise. Thank you ZX for the bubble tea. And thanks to the team for the nice levi's top.

And of cos... to my clique. thankS for the dragon pants man. FNICE.. =)))))

My FYP prof is requesting to meet me soon. And I am going to attend an animal handling course soon. Oh my....

What a dreamer.

Alritey. Finally some free time and inspiration to do an update.

Let's see... This semester's exams seem to be gone in a flash. Never really mug alot. But somehow the time just passed Fuper FFast. So... how were the papers...

  • LSM 3213 Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology - Hopefully the 60% paper will be able to pull up my under par CA. Should be ok.

  • SC1101E Making NO sense of Society- Gone. GG

  • LSM 3251- Ecology and Environmental Processes - Should be fine. 40% paper. 30MCQs and 2 essays. Should be ok.

So... now I am on left with 7days and a paper. LSM 3221- Human Pharmacology. Need to score this man. Otherwise... My Cap.......Fdropped.

Hmm.. All the late nights... Lead to a damaged face. damn it.. stupid yixiong saw me and was like as if I am disfigured la.... I need help. Like can some pro girls bring me go see some skin consultant. like seriously.

Ok. And today I went climbing. IT WAS LIKE FACKED! LIKE SERIOUSLY PACKED. all the jc kids. oh well. Michelle's first climb after numerous years. But I wasn't a good host la... too engrossed with my own climbing and Matthew's nice routes. haHaa. All the studying really brought down my climbing a little. The technique and stuff still there.. but the stamina ah.. oh my. I kinda exerted too fast too furious? And i felt like puking. Maybe overcrowding led to low oxygen level....hMm... Hopefully will be in time for Pumpfest.... 16th MAY! ; )

and..... I saw this nice pair of climbing pants.......Dragon Climber. I like. It's those kind convertible between berms and pants. Cool stuff. Hai. no money. The pants will be handy for europe's grad trip... Which brings me to the next point....

Saw Kelly Khiew at CA. So was just talking to her.. Then I decided to ask her about her trip to Europe in preparation for my own trip next year ( I know its still some time away.. But its always good to look forward to something). So she was telling me about accomodations and stuff in SPAIN. SO looking forward to it. Yixiang and I need some YING spirit. If you are eligible to join us (like Zhaoxiu) please apply via godspeed07@gmail.com or vitaminx75@hotmail.com. Thanks!
We are being ambitious. 2months max- SPAIN, ITALY, FRANCE and UK.

Ok... I talked alot for one post. Could have been more. But I summarized quite abit.

Some random pictures....

If you scroll to the post exactly around this time last year. you will see exactly the same thing. According to SHU, redbull makes you FFAT.

A Mushroom cloud. Or... with abit more imagination...... a turtle! can visualise?
